Ushering In Chinese New Year with the Chanel Dragon

According to the Chinese Zodiac, 2012 is the Year of the Dragon and I thought it is probably apt that I bust out two wonderful reds Chanel has created, to welcome the New Year. Dragons are the mightiest of the zodiac signs and they are fiercely independent and dominant creatures.

Both the Dragon Rouge Allure Laque and Le Vernis were released in 2009. The nail polish is limited edition but may be available although difficult to come by. I have been to a few Chanel counters and it was already sold out. The Rouge Allure Laque is getting discontinued, which is a right shame and the moment I read the news, I went out to hunt for Dragon as it is one of their best-selling and most elusive shades.

I am very happy to have found both the Chanel Dragons because they are such gorgeous reds and are perfect for the Chinese New Year season too. Red is a very significant colour especially during this time of year as it is believed that the colour red will scare away evil spirits and bad fortune.

Chanel Le Vernis in Dragon is a deep, rich red with a beautiful glossy finish. It sometimes appears to have a tinge of brown undertones in certain lighting but for the most part, it is a fiery blue-based red. Application is smooth and opacity is achieved with just one coat. I didn't even need a 2nd coat and just topped it up with a topcoat. Wear time is good like most Chanel polishes I have tried.

The Rouge Allure Laque in Dragon is also a gorgeous creamy red. It is a deeper red than its nail polish version and is slightly more blue-based but is not too cool-toned, which is why I believe it will look very flattering on most people. The finish is really smooth and glossy. The formula is absolutely lovely, it is moisturising without being tacky and applies well even on dry lips. It goes on like a gloss but has the finish of a lipstick. It is quite a lasting lip colour and fades off gradually without leaving a weird ring around the lips.

When wearing such a strong lip colour, it is best to keep the rest of your makeup fairly soft and neutral otherwise the whole look will be a bit much. In the photos, I kept my eye makeup quite natural but it didn't really show up due to the lighting. But you can see how vibrant the two Dragon reds are against my skin tone.

As mentioned earlier, the Rouge Allure Laque (RM110) is getting discontinued and Dragon is extremely difficult to come by. The Le Vernis (RM70) in the same colour should still be available but it is also a limited edition shade. If you are interested, I'd urge you to check out your local Chanel counter or boutique soon ;-)

So, what will you be wearing on your lips and nails this Chinese New Year? Will you be using bold colours or something softer and more Spring-like?
